Phe Festival 2023 opens with Gallery, a collective exhibition of 23 artists from the Canary Islands

The sixth edition of Phe Gallery brings together twenty proposals from 23 artists and opens its doors this Friday the 28th at the Castillo de San Felipe, with extensions to other spaces in the town

The festival activates its offer in 2023 with this platform for the dissemination of artistic creation in the Canary Islands, which embraces painting, sculpture, photography, video art or installations

The eighth edition of Phe Festival, which will be held on August 18 and 19 in Puerto de la Cruz, opens a window to current artistic creation in the Canary Islands with the inauguration this Friday, July 28, at 8:00 p.m., of a sample collective in the Castillo de San Felipe, which brings together twenty projects selected in the sixth call for Phe Gallery. A varied artistic proposal with which the programming of parallel activities of the Porto festival begins in 2023, which reflects individually and globally on creative current events in the Canary Islands, while placing the accent, gaze, gesture and pulse on contemporary social and cultural reality. The opening of Phe Gallery 2023 will be covered by the actions of the performer Llum Canut and the dj's Bliss and Pedrosa.

Creators who work in formats such as painting, sculpture, graffiti, photography, illustration, video art, action art or window dressing, among others, meet at Phe Gallery 2023. A showcase of the new island creative imprint that presents twenty of works signed by 23 artists who represent voices and perspectives of today for people of today, experiences in the present with a vision of the immediate future. 

Curated in this edition by beatrice rock, an art historian with training in the management of cultural projects, together with a curatorial team made up of agents from the artistic field in different areas and disciplines, the exhibition is made up of a selection of the works registered in the Phe Gallery 2023 call to date. June 9. The curatorial team is made up of: Dailo Boat, filmmaker, curator and cultural researcher; Paula Skull, an urban artist specializing in the creation of murals and whose work addresses issues such as the concept of identity and female empowerment; and Zulo Room, an exhibition space founded by the architects Pablo Delgado and Iñaki Pérez.

The artists and projects selected at Phe Gallery 2023 that will star in the exhibition at the San Felipe Castle and the interventions in other urban spaces are: Alba Peñate, Atri Galván, Azahara Capella, Brenda Cap, Carlotto Rose, CoEXISTo (Víctor Cabrera, Derek Pedrós and Andrea Pérez), Danilo, David Núñez, Elisa Pinto, Fani B. Flores, Gabriel Tondreau, Laura Santana, Noé Pullviac, Pablo Lavers, Patricia Reyes Yanes, Pilar Boullosa, Rethinkyourgarbage (Lucilla Bellini and Magali Brincat), Rubén Guedes and Sara park.

“The artists challenge us to reflect on various topics ranging from tourism and aesthetics, to desire and pleasure, Canarian traditions and festivities, climate change and the relationship between architecture and dance”, explains the curator Beatriz Rock. An exhibition that invites us to rethink our relationship with nature and the impact of our actions on the planet. As the curator explains, in this artistic proposal “we will explore the compulsive accumulation of objects and their symbolism in relation to the Canarian identity. Through still lifes, we reinterpret festivities and traditions as fabricated myths that reflect the social and cultural organization of our environment. In addition, we present works of visual metaphors symbolizing the threat of climate change”.

The public will be able to discover the different artistic proposals at the Castillo de San Felipe Cultural Space until August 27, as well as in the Columbus Shopping Center, Alteza supermarket, Ágora Bar & Café and Autos Plaza. In this way, Phe Gallery opens up to other spaces in the city, with interventions in attached places and in shop windows to offer the public a tour and visual game with innovative artistic proposals.

The launch of the sixth edition of the Gallery, organized by Phe Festival and the Puerto de la Cruz Culture area, inaugurates the program of parallel activities of the Phe Festival in 2023, which in its eighth edition presents on the 18th and 19th of August, two days of concerts and more than 20 hours of live music in Puerto de la Cruz which will feature the British duo Orbital, one of the great references in dance music and electronic culture; the Argentine rapper Trueno, a phenomenon of the urban genre who premieres his live show in the Canary Islands; the also British The Reytons; and a list of outstanding national and local artists, such as Natalia Lacunza, Arde Bogotá, Second, Jimena Amarillo, Sexy Zebras, Bala, Rocío Saiz, Adora, Antiplancton Shinova, Rocío Márquez & Bronquio, Morreo, Ghouljaboy, Hoonine and Zurych. 

The Porto festival offers visitors an exceptional vacation experience and a catalog of Parallel leisure and entertainment activities for children and adults during the week of the event. Puerto de la Cruz and spaces such as Jardines Playa Jardín, Plaza Europa and La Marea Surf, in Playa Martiánez, are the settings for different experiences related to urban sports, active leisure, and healthy lifestyles for adults and children. 

Proposals like the Phe Summer, which are held from Monday, August 14, offer a range of proposals between surf classes for children and adults, at La Marea Surf School, in Playa Martiánez; capoeira, slackline, acroyoga and inverted workshops at the Playa Jardín Gardens; and surfskate and slackline workshops, as well as BMX, skate and scooter initiation workshops for all ages, in Plaza Europa, in Puerto de La Cruz. To highlight in this context the call, on Saturday August 19 in the Plaza de Europa, of the fourth edition of the popular meeting Phe Yoga, with sessions of Balance inspiration, tai chi and pilates, hatha yoga, rocket yoga, meditation and breathing, and an ecstatic yoga dance session.

The parallel activities of Phe Festival 2023 are completed with days dedicated to wine culture, with visits to the Arautava, La Haya and La Suertita wineries, which include a tasting of the reference wines of these brands and gastronomic tasting. The festival site will have a space dedicated to promoting these wines in the so-called Wine Garden.

Phe Festival and the Culture area of Puerto de la Cruz organize for the sixth consecutive year Phe Gallery, a call open to creators for the presentation of artistic projects in different formats (painting, sculpture, graffiti, installations, photography, illustration, video art, performance, window dressing...), which will be shown to the public in the collective exhibition that will take place at the Castillo San Felipe Cultural Space from July 28 to August 27, a collaborative proposal that kicks off the parallel activities in the 2023 edition of the festival.

Phe Gallery is a platform for the dissemination of current art made in the Canary Islands, generating creative and social actions to bring cultural innovation closer to all audiences. It offers an open space for meeting and dialogue for emerging artists from the islands, thus collaborating with the promotion of culture as a factor of sustainable development in Puerto de la Cruz. Its objective is to serve as a means to give visibility and dissemination to projects by new authors or groups that reflect on contemporary art, highlighting aspects related to sustainability and the social context. This project is developed especially in collaboration with Juventud Canaria.

Curated in this edition by Beatriz Roca, the exhibition will be made up mainly of a selection of works received through the registration form on the festival website, in which they will have to attach a digital portfolio with their proposal before June 9.  

This initiative coincides with the eighth edition of the Phe Festival, which will bring together in Puerto de la Cruz an outstanding line-up of national, international and local artists in the two days of concerts that will take place on Friday the 18th and Saturday the 19th at its usual venue on the esplanade from the pier, where attendees will find a complete festival experience. Groups like the British Orbital and The Reytones together with the Argentine Trueno lead a bill that completes Arde Bogotá, Natalia Lacunza, Second, Shinova, Rocío Márquez & Bronquio and many other current references.

In addition to the days of concerts, Phe Festival once again includes a varied program of parallel activities with Phe Urban Sports and Phe Yoga multiplying the attractions with the expanded Phe Summer Camp proposal, and the collaboration of the city's cultural environment.

Commitment to culture

The days of live concerts on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 August have once again become the main theme of this summer experience that brought together 1,500 people per day in the 11,000-square-meter stable venue located on the esplanade of the Puerto de the cross, and what was adapted to the health prevention and safety measures required by the regulations.

The public at Phe has not only been able to enjoy the emotion of live music with a line-up that brought together names such as Anne Tijoux, Zahara, Bizarre Love Triangle, Rigoberta Bandini, Rufus T. Firefly, A lot, Biznaga, Women, _june, jack bison, Mel Ömana and Pat Llombet –with We Are Trash and The Groove Brothers as resident DJ– but also a set of parallel activities for the enjoyment, participation and motivation of all the residents and visitors of the municipality. Urban sports, yoga and contemporary art have integrated the festival's program which, once again this year, has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable practices. In this way, those attending the urban competitions and workshops on Aqualia Phe Sports, as well as the participants in the different practices of Phe Yoga, in addition to Phe Gallery, the collective exhibition installed at the Castillo de San Felipe Cultural Space since the end of July, has brought together hundreds of attendees in this sixth edition that recovers the spirit of the summer festival that characterizes it.

As was done in 2020, Phe Festival has been held again adapting its organization and structure to the new context, all the activities have been carried out with an exhaustive security protocol for the public, artists and the team involved in the organization. Phe Festival expands the program of parallel activities in its 2021 edition

Urban sports, yoga, art and music to revitalize and convert Puerto de la Cruz into a benchmark for cultural and leisure activities in the Canary Islands.

The 2021 edition of Phe Festival will feature an intense program of parallel activities that, grouped into themes such as art, urban sports, yoga or music, will help make Puerto de la Cruz a benchmark for cultural and leisure activities in the Canary Islands. Phe Gallery, a space for the exhibition of the current creation; Phe Sports, a catalog of competitions and shows of urban sports to experience and get to know the city and its citizens; or Phe Yoga, the union of mind and body through practice in the open air are some of the complementary proposals to the concert days that will take place in the month of August.

Any regular at Phe Festival, the event with independent music in Puerto de la Cruz, knows that they will not only find the mere exhibition of the live concerts – which will be held on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 August – but they will be able to enrich their experience festival-goer actively participating in a wide range of entertainment that invites the public to share emotions and dialogue, a meeting point that generates sensory dynamics that benefit everyone.

Sports, Yoga and Gallery

In the 2021 edition, some proposals that could not be carried out last year due to the pandemic, such as Phe Sports, will also return. Fans and professionals of urban sports will find a complete program in various areas of the city from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 where adrenaline and action are the protagonists. It will begin on Thursday the 19th with the training session for the regional skate and BMX championship, which this year moves to the San Antonio skate park, one of the most complete in the Islands. The day of Friday 20 will be dedicated entirely to the competition in both disciplines.

The sports aspect of the sixth edition of the Porto festival  presents as a novelty this year an urban downhill MTB with the aim of revitalizing the city center on the morning of Saturday 21. The test will begin at the Hotel Las Águilas and continue with a vertiginous descent to the fishing pier passing through the Taoro Park. Competitors roll individually and the one who reaches the finish line in the shortest time wins.

To round it off, the fishing pier will once again be the scene of the Aqualia Water Jump, a spectacular display of acrobatic jumps into the sea, already traditional in the Phe Sports program. It will be on Saturday at noon when the riders will be able to jump into the sea from the ramp and achieve the best score by the judges.

The sports activities end in the afternoon around the pier, with the awards ceremony and a sample of activities typical of urban culture such as break dancing and roller-skating in acrobatic and playful variations in dance mode.

In its commitment to invigorate ideas and spirit, the festival once again incorporates into its programming one of the great trends that the health crisis left us in 2020: Phe Yoga. In this edition, the number of sessions is increased to enjoy this discipline that combines meditation and physical well-being, and will take place on Saturday, August 20, starting at 10 a.m. on the Isla del Lago Martiánez.

This year Phe Gallery will reflect mainly on the reality that we are living. In its bid to promote the work of artists from the Canary Islands, the collective exhibition will bring together, from July 30 to August 28 at the Castillo San Felipe Cultural Space, the work of 3TTMAN, Aldo García, Carlos S.
