dance brothers

The electronic pulse of the British duo Orbital, made up of brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll, shakes up the first day of concerts at Phe Festival 2023 in their first live performance in the Canary Islands with their recent studio album Optical Delusion

The eighth edition of Phe Festival 2023 embraces electronic culture and dance music with the presence of the British duo Orbital, in their first live performance on a stage in the Canary Islands in their more than 30 years of activity. The electronic pulse of the brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll, snipers of rave culture and dance floors, one of the outstanding references of the British scene of the 90s, which takes its name from the London ring road, the M25, where raves and the electronic madness brought by acid house flourished, it is, for obvious reasons, one of the highlights of the programming of the music and trends festival hosted by the town of Puerto de la Cruz.

Leading group, innovator and pioneer of dance music since the early 90s of the last century, Orbital reaches Phe Festival 2023 in top form and with a fresh repertoire, that of his recent studio album Optical Delusion, which was published last February. It is also the second date this year in Spain after passing through the FIB in Benicassim last July. With Orbital, the Phe Festival 2023 will close the first day of live music at the dock esplanade in Puerto de la Cruz. The British will take to the main stage around 12:50 am, according to the concert schedule for Friday, August 18.

Paired in the Olympus of electronic dance with rhythm alchemists of the caliber of The Shamen, Letfield, Underworld, Prodigy, Faithless or Chemical Brothers, Orbital has withstood the passage of time with better muscle, with an excellence reserved for a few artists in a scene such as electronic dance music in all its variants and known subgenres. His speech, with the vocation of playing music live from his first shows, with noticeable influences from punk rock and early electronics, has gone through techno, acid house, breakbeat and EDM -Electronic Dance Music-, and a endless labels.

Active between 1989 and 2004, Orbital has always had one foot in the present to draw the music of a future that was yesterday. Like everything else, the band has had intermittent moments, and it was in 2009 when the Hartnolls put their classic lighted glasses back on and since then they have maintained a regular schedule between recordings, productions and tours. Like the bands and artists who made their way into electronic music in the transition between the 1980s and 1990s, Orbital built bridges with techno to blur the boundaries with other styles, and contributed to popularizing electronic music through live performances and attachment to club culture.

With more than 15 albums published since his celebrated debut Orbital (1991), the also called Green Album, that next to orbital 2 (1993), the Brown Album, are leading titles in electronica and rave culture; and references that cannot be ignored to put the British duo in perspective, such as In Sides (1996), snivilisation (1994), The Middle of Nowhere (1999), together (2001), Wonky (2012) or monsters exist (2018), which came after six years of silence in the studio and which until last February was the last published before the launch of  Optical Delusion (2023). Soundtracks for film and television and some four dozen singles, including several classic songs that have had a great impact on club, pop and underground music, complete a long career that places them above other artists of their generation.

from past to present

Optical Delusion (2023) brings back to the present some veterans who refuse to fall into nostalgia. This tenth reference in his discography is an album generous in collaborations with artists who have little in common with the electronic seams of Orbital, in the case of Coppe, Dina Ipavic, Penelope Isles, The Little Pest, The Mediaeval Baebes, Anna B Savage and Sleaford Mods .

Topics like Ringa Ringa (The Old Pandemic Folk Song), with The Mediaeval Baebes, which opens the disc, is a declaration of intent of what the disc contains as a whole. Day One, techno structure with Dina Ipavic; others like Are You Alive? with Penelope Islas, with a pop structure in the vein of Kraftwerk; the nod to breakbeat and drum'n'bass in Requiem for the Pre-Apocalypse; or the final coda Moon Princess, with the Japanese Coppe. To highlight above all, the outstanding dirty rat, with Sleaford Mods, the first single from the album, another blowout tracks from the Orbital factory, which is added to a repertoire with which the English duo move their audience to the dance floor as if there were no tomorrow.

Recognized by Kraftwerk as outstanding students - the German group invited Orbital to do one of the six remixes of Expo Remix (2000)-, pieces that are the history of electronic music sprout from Orbital's suitcase, as is the case with chime, Satan, Belfast, Impact, Halcyon, Are We Here?, Remember, where is it going? (with Stephen Hawking), among dozens, in addition to that nod to the pioneers of electronic music with the version of the soundtrack of the series doctor who (1963), composed by Ron Grainer and performed by Delia Derbyshire for the BBC.

Gerardo Cartón: "The way of living music today is closer to consumption than to a way of life"

The writer, musician and promoter from Madrid, former director of PIAS Record Spain, stars in a meeting with the public on Saturday 19, at 12 noon, with the presentation of his latest book 'This is how the 20th century (and part of the 21st) is danced)’

A song for each year of life, from 1972 to 2016, is the literary alibi of Gerardo Cardboard  (Madrid, 1972) to take a musical and vital journey through the soundtrack of a generation, in a story where personal experiences and experiences intersect, and the most notorious socio-political and cultural events of the 20th century and part of the 21st. All this and much more will be found by readers in the book.  This is how the 20th century (and part of the 21st) is danced, edited by Muzikalia, which the writer, musician –Micromachines and Radio 77– and show promoter, activist of the independent scene and former director of PIAS Records Spain –a company in which he spent fifteen years– presents this coming Saturday, August 19 in Puerto de la Cruz, in the programming of Parallel activities of the eighth edition of Phe Festival. It will be a meeting with readers in an open conversation with the author about this publication, at 12:00, in the ticket office area and access to the concert venue.

"I think that before, and it's not for being nostalgic, there was more passion among those of us who dedicated ourselves to music, it was something more vocational, and today, although there are many people who like music, the way of living it it is closer to the consumption of a product than to a way of life”, explains Gerardo Cartón. In this context, This is how the 20th century (and part of the 21st) is danced It seems like a reference publication to delve into a collection of songs that, in the author's opinion and for the reasons and circumstances that he develops in each chapter, are major milestones in the history of music and in his life.

“With each chapter I take a song from each year of my life, from 1972, which is when I was born, until 2016, which is as far as the book goes, and what I do is mix it with my experiences and with those events that happened in the world every year”, says Gerardo Cartón. In his opinion, the music that was generated at a certain time cannot be dissociated from its context. “I also wanted to do a historical summary of these almost 50 years in a more entertaining way, especially now that it seems that young people don't read stories, essays or anything, and let's see if at least with this we can educate the public a bit. staff," he points out.

The story begins in 1972 with the song starman, by David Bowie, a song that connects with two of Gerardo's passions. “There are many lyrics that I use as the common thread in each chapter, and you will see how eclectic I am because the songs that I put in the book range from the Ramones to Kayne West, passing through Pj Harvey, Beyoncé, Gorillaz…, there is also a lot of that eclecticism of how it was danced before and now”. Along with this particular soundtrack, the phenomenon of engagement in social networks appears in the pages of this book, stories of the development of technology in the conquest of space - the result of Gerardo Cartón's fixation on science fiction -, literature, and without losing reference to the social and political context of each era that marked a change in cycle and life, "especially those that occurred in Spain, from the murder of Carrero Blanco, which is a bit where the book begins, until the irruption of Podemos, etc.”

"The artist has to work much more"

The music that is danced now is different. The industry has also changed, as have consumer habits. According to Gerardo Cartón, we must bear in mind that “the way the artist communicates with his fans changes; Today the artist has to work much more than before when he had a company promotion or marketing department that did everything for him and now he has to be the one who does a large part of that work”.

To get an idea of what is trending, what sells and generates box office in the national market, it is enough to go through the posters of the festival circuit, those of large format and those of medium capacity. A league in which the Phe Festival plays, which in its eighth edition bets on legendary artists, such as the British Orbital, pioneers in rave culture and electronic dance since the 90s of the last century; and new voices on the way to a planetary phenomenon in urban music, in the case of the Argentine rapper Trueno, among other style proposals presented by this year's lineup. “That eclecticism has always been the spirit of Phe”, says Gerardo Cartón. A festival that in his opinion "has known how to combine a lot of music with let's say more classic groups, even if they are from Spanish indie, with more advanced proposals, and I think it was necessary -in reference to Trueno- because I have always complained that the music was repeated, in fact I keep complaining that the posters of most festivals are like those of 20 years ago or something like that, and Phe is a new festival in every way”.

This is how the 20th century (and part of the 21st) is danced  It is the third editorial stake of Gerardo Cartón after Manual of the perfect festival goer (Lunwerg, 2015), signed together with Jorge Obón and Manuel Bartual, and of which a second part was made. “I have always really liked reading and writing, they have been my two passions, I would tell you even more than music. In fact, when I was working at PIAS I already wrote from time to time in rockdelux, in mondosound…”, reasons the author about a literary vocation that has him busy in his next novel. “When you are a fan of literature, what your body asks for is a novel, it is like the mother format of the literary, and I have been writing my next novel for some time now, which will be total fiction, it has nothing to do with this book, it is super crazy, a mixture of a generational novel, a travel novel, a thriller and science fiction.

The meeting with Gerardo Cartón, on Saturday, August 19, at 12:00 p.m., is included in the program of parallel activities of Phe Festival 2023 that are held in Puerto de la Cruz along with other sporting and relaxation events that revitalize the town of Puerto de la Cruz. . At the book launch This is how the 20th century (and part of the 21st) is danced are added in the Saturday day at noon orn eco-didactic concert with the title of Don't throw it away, touch it first, invitation open to the family public from 11.30 am; and the Ant Cosmos session in dj set format at 12:30 pm at the Levis Stage.

Phe Festival or the last chance to see Second live in the Canary Islands

The Murcian band has decided to stop their own musical time and Phe Festival will be the last stage in the Canary Islands to see it live: it will be next Friday, August 18 in Puerto de la Cruz

Second has been on stage for 25 years, being one of the most representative Spanish indie bands

The last time. An instant that is so afraid. Well, a moment like that, one last time, will be the one that will be lived with Second in Phe Festival. The musical event in Puerto de la Cruz will be the last opportunity to see the Second band live in the Canary Islands. The Murcians will be on the first day of the eighth edition of Phe Festival: Friday, August 18.

Sean Frutos, Jorge Guirao, Nando Robles and Fran Guirao are unplugging from the music scene at the end of 2023. They have been on stage for 25 years as one of the most representative Spanish indie bands. Although they began singing in English, the success in Spain made them return to their native language to communicate perfectly with the Spanish-speaking public and to live a prolific musical career in terms of studio albums -nine plus one live (titled 15 )- positioning itself as one of the best bands of the last decades in the Spanish territory.

Live is their natural habitat and in their farewell statement they have made it very clear that the energy of this latest tour will be very special. Their repertoire will include songs from their latest album, 'Flores imposibles', but also those great songs that characterize them: 'Invisible', 'Rincón exquisite', 'NADA', 'Primera vez' or 'Nivel inexperienced'.

Beyond being pigeonholed in a certain musical genre, Second has defined in some interviews that indie for them is "something in which art prevails over the commercial". They have changed record labels on several occasions, but without losing their identity and always knowing that they would make the music they wanted. That music that excites and on many occasions rides on optimistic melodies and choruses that stick to your feet almost without wanting to.

They have been true to themselves for 25 years. They have not abandoned halftime, they have composed long songs without fear of the next button, they recorded a live album accompanied by the string and brass sections of the Murcia Region Symphony Orchestra or they rejected adding color to their musical palette although sometimes they went up to a major key without qualms.

Phe Festival is going to be one of the fields where Second will give everything. It will be like throwing out the remains when it is the last opportunity to stay in the memory of the public. And while M-Clan talks about not staying in someone's memory forever on 'Stay Over', Second will put on a memorable and unforgettable concert at Phe Festival.

Second will be special within Phe Festival. Legends of dance music and electronic culture will perform on the Porto stage, such as the British Orbital; and a wide catalog of proposals of different octane and style that have as protagonists Trueno, The Reytons, Natalia Lacunza, Arde Bogotá, Jimena Amarillo, Sexy Zebras, Bala, Rocío Saiz, Adora, Antiplancton, Shinova, Rocío Márquez & Bronquio, Morreo , Ghouljaboy, Hoonine and Zurych.

Thunder Heats Phe Festival

The festival bets on the Argentine rapper and singer, an unstoppable phenomenon of the urban genre that will perform for the first time in the Canary Islands on August 19

The author of incendiary pieces such as 'Fuck el Police', in collaboration with Cypress Hill, and hits of the caliber of 'Dance Crip', 'Atrevido' or 'Mamichulo' completes the second day of concerts scheduled in Puerto de la Cruz

The sharp verb of Trueno, the alias of the rapper, singer and freestyler Argentinian Mateo Palacios Corazzina (La Boca, Buenos Aires, 2002), will be very present at the eighth edition of the Phe Festival, which will be held the next August 18 and 19 in Puerto de La Cruz. The Argentine rapper has become an unstoppable phenomenon of urban music, and will set foot on a Canarian stage for the first time on Saturday, August 19, on the second and last day of concerts at the Porto festival. A bet of the organization of Phe Festival 2023 that places the author of Dance Crip,  Daring, Fuck the Police, We went out at night, Buenos Aires on fire or Background  as an outstanding headliner among a cast of artists who navigate the eclectic sound palette offered this year by the Phe Festival.

Trueno's passage through Tenerife is one of the dates of the tour Right or wrong Tour 2023 in which the Argentine artist has been presenting the repertoire of his second album Right or wrong, which was published in May of last year. His debut came at the age of 18 with the album Bold, an accurate statement of intent by a singer who was on his way to having the world in the palm of his hand. A challenge that Trueno lacks, according to the notable success that his songs have found among an audience fascinated by his proposal. A star with all the letters, with a short but productive and successful career -with several nominations and a Latin Grammy last year for the album daring live, awarded in the last two editions of the Gardel Awards, among other recognitions-, who knows what he sings and knows the path he is traveling, and who balances his musical discourse among all the sound variants that spring from the sweetest continent: rap, funk, salsa, all of this is handled in Trueno. Puerto de la Cruz will witness a live show that seems spectacular, and that due to expectations will foreseeably be one of the concerts to highlight in the historic Phe Festival.

The visit to the Canary Islands is the second part of a tour that will take the already planetarium kid from the La Boca neighborhood, after passing through the Phe Festival 2023, to places like Seville, Pontevedra and Granada. Last June, he already turned the national stages upside down in which he realized the potential of his elastic flow during his time at Primavera Sound, in Barcelona and Madrid, Santiago de Compostela, Malaga, Seville and Granada, where he is repeating now in summer.

Thunder is the mirror of the street, of the neighborhood, of its people and its luck. His career began long before he reached the age of majority, at the age of 14, when he dared to fight cockfights among easy-talking youngsters with artistic aspirations. The family environment was decisive in his interest in music. Son of Juliana Corazzina and Pedro Palacios, the Uruguayan rapper MC Peligro, formerly of the group Diferentes Attitudes Juveniles and leader of the artistic collective Sur Capital Clika, who was the one who plunged him into the world of hip hop; and grandson, through his father, of Yamandú Palacios, a musician linked to popular circles and who shared the stage with Alfredo Zitarroza, Joan Manuel Serrat and Joaquín Sabina.

The applicant abandoned his condition years ago and as a result of a meteoric career he is today an outstanding part of the Olympus of Argentine rap and trap that has Bizarrap as a great reference. Before recording albums, two studio and one live, and doubling down on multiple collaborations, the Argentine's verb began to break loose in cockfighting. In this rapper circuit in Buenos Aires, he covered himself with stripes until in 2019 he won the scepter of champion of the contest organized by Red Bull. A freestyler street that soon found the north and the vocation. In 2017, he had released the theme KING, his debut in music under the Neuen record label, but it was in 2019 when things would change direction. With this same label and with Sony distribution it arrived the following year Bold, a collection of songs created during the coronavirus pandemic, in which the rapper's influences are evident, what his weapons are and who he is aiming for.

Bizarrap's Hand

The sessions of freestyle that Trueno did with Bizarrap were a notable boost in popularity, as well as songs of the type mamichula, with Bizarrap and Nicki Nicole, which in six months exceeded 220 million views on the YouTube platform.

And it is that as the singer proudly remembers in Fuck the Police: "If Thunder says hip, the whole neighborhood hops". An assertion that is verified in what happens in each of his concerts, and what the Phe Festival 2023 will witness, and in the more than five and a half million subscribers on YouTube and the almost seven million that the artist adds on Instagram.

Fuck the Police is one of the thick themes of his second and last Right or wrong (2022), which contains hits like Argentina, with Nathy Peluso; Panama, with Duki; jungle, with Randy and Bizarrap; One step, with J. Balvin; I have it, Just for you or Dance Crip, generous funk rap tribute to one of his clear influences, Ilya Kuriaki & The Valderramas, jugglers of hip hop, funk, rock and dance-pop, with a final sample of the phrasing of cool. We must not forget the repertoire with which Thunder was discovered three years ago now, which will surely have an echo in Puerto de la Cruz: Bold, the album and theme, and others from the cut of Cucumelo, Background, Ñeri; Bleeding, with Wos, where he stated emphatically "whether you like it or not we are the new rock and roll, boy"; and the classic mamichula, with Nicky Nicole.

Is Fuck the Police the penultimate shot by Trueno that had been shaking the networks since the end of July: a remix with Cypress Hill, a band from California and hip hop leaders since the late 80s and authors of I wanna get high and Insane in the brain. Another notch in the revolver of the Argentine rapper, of attitude and trend, to which are added collaborations with the best players in the world urban league, and other triumphs linked to his time at the Lollapalooza festivals in Chile, Vive Latino in Mexico or the Argentine Quilmes Rock Festival; and share the stage with the British band Gorillaz singing a duet Clint Eastwood with Damon Albarn.

With Thunder the Phe Festival will put an end to plus 20 hours of live music scheduled at the Puerto de la Cruz venue on Friday, August 18 and Saturday, August 19, and on whose stage legends of dance music and electronic culture will perform, such as the British Orbital; and a wide catalog of proposals of different octane and style that have as protagonists The Reytons, Natalia Lacunza, Arde Bogotá, Second, Jimena Amarillo, Sexy Zebras, Bala, Rocío Saiz, Adora, Antiplancton, Shinova, Rocío Márquez & Bronquio, Morreo , Ghouljaboy, Hoonine and Zurych.

Fresh fish or fresh fish?

Write down the species you can catch (and eat) on the coast of Tenerife

#TenerifeWake upEmotions

If there's anything you can brag about Tenerife and especially from Puerto de la Cruz it is fresh fish. It is not in vain that there are many families in the municipality that have 'always' been linked to the fishing tradition. Like that of Adán Santiago Estévez Martín, head of Grupo La Pescadería, a family business dedicated to catching, selling and cooking. That is, they have a fishing boat, a fishmonger on the dock and in the municipal market (with show cooking on Saturdays), as well as two restaurants in the city center (La Pescadería and La Pescadería Street).

But his is an unusual case in this coastal port where “there are only five or six professional fishing boats left that go out to sea.” A productive sector is that of fishing that until not so long ago has been a “source of food” for many Portuenses and in which there is no generational change. “The majority of the people in the Port were either fishermen or worked in hotels” and currently “there is not even a 10% of what there was before,” says Adán.

There are many factors that determine what has happened. For Adam, one of the most important is that there are not enough fish in the sea, whether due to overfishing, pollution or global warming. This fact logically affects consumption. “There is also another issue, and that is that fish has not appreciated. In 10 years the fish has continued to be sold the same, at the same price. This is because there is no demand,” he adds. To exemplify this, he tells us that “90%” of the current catch “goes to the restaurants, which is where the demand is” when a few years ago that same percentage “of the fish that was caught went to the hotels, which worked with fresh fish.” from Puerto de la Cruz. Nowadays there are very few hotels that work with fresh fish.”

Faced with this situation, which is not exclusive to Puerto de la Cruz but a global challenge, the response is to diversify, innovate and look for alternatives to provide an outlet for this artisanal and demanding activity.

What varieties are caught in these waters?

If you are thinking of visiting Tenerife and more specifically Puerto de la Cruz to be surprised by its local cuisine, you have to know what varieties of fish you will find in the area. “Especially beach fish,” says Adán, “the old fish, the seabream, the whitecap... This area has black kingfish, which is highly appreciated. Some little kisses too.”

What if we look for something different? “The rooster is a very good fish that is caught seasonally a lot here on this coast and it is a delicacy.”

As for the fishing gear most used by the fishermen of Puerto de la Cruz, “due to the type of geography” there are “pot fishing and shrimp fishing, which is also done in pot”, a practice that is developed by the boat from La Pescadería in Puerto de la Cruz, although “there are some small boats that are still doing longline fishing.”

The effort made from the manufacturing of the fishing gear (pots, nets, etc.) until the product reaches the plate is invested mainly in the region: “We have a point of sale on the dock and also La Pescadería del Mercado Municipal ; The fishing goes to the fishmonger and to the restaurants.”

Fish and eat with conscience

When we travel or when we go on excursions to nearby towns we want to taste good gastronomy, that is, eat well. But we also want to eat consciously. We are not only concerned that the product is of quality, but also its origin and the processes to which it has been exposed until the moment it is on the plate. And with this, betting on sustainability, which in this case also means guaranteeing that people who depend on fishing can maintain their livelihood.

A good way to support it is to go to the restaurants in Puerto de la Cruz and order local fish. The offer is very varied: from more traditional grilled, grilled or stewed proposals, to more avant-garde recipes, prepared in hamburgers, or cooked in an elaborate stew. Of course, consumer preferences are different, according to Adán: “Customers here look for local fish, they know the island's fish. People from abroad either come looking for the fish they know because they have tried it on some occasion. , or else a fish that does not have many bones. Especially the Nordics prefer a fillet or a slice.”

But the star, without a doubt, in recent years is the fresh Canarian tuna, especially the year-round bigeye tuna and the seasonal bluefin tuna. “Prepared on the grill, in tartar that is now fashionable… an important gap is opening up because almost all restaurants are putting it on their menu.” It is one of the varieties of fish that sell the most at La Pescadería, “a fish that is very expensive outside of here and we, who have it at a very good price, were not taking advantage of it,” says Adán, who adds that among the top 3 of the most requested are the grouper and the grouper.

With these notes you already have an idea of what you can enjoy, gastronomically speaking, if you go down to the Port one of these days. So, bon appetit!

An amalgamation of sounds that sneak into the Ant Cosmos sessions, and that sets the pace for the beginning of the second day of concerts at the Phe Festival 2023.

books to dance

The ticket office area and access to the concert venue of the Phe Festival 2023 will also be the point of a literary and musical meeting, at 12:00 noon, with Gerardo Cardboard  (Madrid, 1972). Musician in projects such as Micromachines and Radio 77, former director of PIAS Records Spain –a company in which he spent fifteen years–, show promoter, radio host, DJ and writer. An activist of the independent scene whose literary vocation and the publication of his latest book This is how the 20th century (and part of the 21st) is danced, edited by Muzikalia, brings it to Puerto de la Cruz, sheltered by Phe Festival 2023. It will be a meeting with readers in an open conversation with the author about this publication.

According to Muzikalia review, This is how the 20th century (and part of the 21st) is danced “It is a vital and musical journey not only through his life, but through ours. An essay as peculiar as himself, embodied in nearly 300 pages that show that there are things that go far beyond the duration of a song, any scene, any record company, any festival and any fashion. That is the strip where it has been moving for a long time and here we will find out”.

The author of Manual of the perfect festival goer (Lunwerg, 2015), signed together with Jorge Obón and Manuel Bartual, invites the reader on a musical journey that starts from 1972 to the present, song by song, “to put that nameless, outcast generation in front of the mirror, anonymous, and deeply uprooted, but chameleonically strong. A generation that is not from the scene, nor from the indie, much less millennial. His, yours, ours".

Phe Festival invites you to discover the culture of wine with visits to wineries and tastings

The eighth edition of the festival organizes a meeting with Wine Garden in two reference wineries in the Valley of La Orotava, and gives impetus to the local product in a well-kept space within the concert venue

The eighth edition of Phe Festival, which will be held on August 18 and 19 in Puerto de la Cruz, endorses its commitment to local products and sustainability through a series of actions linked to the enoculture. A holiday experience that also includes the culture of wine at the Phe Festival with the name of Winegarden. It is a leisure proposal that is part of the varied offer that this year presents the Phexperiences, and that complete the parallel activities of this edition.

Wine Garden It is a meeting point for wine culture and innovation that is structured between visits with limited places to different reference wineries in the Valley of La Orotava, with wine tasting and gastronomic tasting, on Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 August; and the creation of its own space in the festival grounds, on Friday the 18th and Saturday the 19th, where you can discover and taste a selection of wines from four wineries.

These conferences around wine begin on Wednesday August 16 with the first of the organized visits to the wineries in the area, which will have as its first destination the winery The Hague. It is a small winery that makes three types of white wines -fruity, dry and barrel-, with a limited production from native Canary Islands varieties and vines that are over 200 years old.

On Thursday, August 17, the second of the visits of Wine Garden leads to the Arautava winery. A winery that is due to respect and tradition with the manual work of the vineyards and the exclusive commitment to native varieties. Cultivated on volcanic soil that gives a “unique minerality” to these Tenerife wines, which are made with as little intervention as possible and which enhances the varietal personality of the Listán Negro, Listán Blanco, Albillo Criollo and Malvasía Aromatica grapes.

Both visits have been organized for small groups, with registration through the festival website

These meetings in wineries that make possible the first toasts prior to the launch of the eighth edition of Phe 2023, will have their particular soundtrack with the participation of djs and regular selectors of the Phe Festival.

The activities around the wines of the Valley of La Orotava have their extension in the two days of the festival, August 18 and 19, with a space in the Phe 2023 venue reserved for four wineries of this denomination of origin: to the wineries The Hague and Arautava, protagonists in the visits and tasting in the previous days, two others are added: the winery Lomar, limited production; and Luck of the Marquis, one of the four Spanish wineries -together with Tempos Vega Sicilia, Can Sumoi and Viñedos Sierra Cantabria- that is among the 100 best in the world according to the latest 2022 ranking of the American magazine Wine & Spirits. A recognition that the Tenerife winery repeats after the distinctions received by this benchmark publication in the sector in 2019 and 2021.

The festival activates its offer in 2023 with this platform for the dissemination of artistic creation in the Canary Islands, which embraces painting, sculpture, photography, video art or installations

The eighth edition of Phe Festival, which will be held on August 18 and 19 in Puerto de la Cruz, opens a window to current artistic creation in the Canary Islands with the inauguration this Friday, July 28, at 8:00 p.m., of a sample collective in the Castillo de San Felipe, which brings together twenty projects selected in the sixth call for Phe Gallery. Creators who work in formats such as painting, sculpture, graffiti, photography, illustration, video art, action art or window dressing, among others, meet at Phe Gallery 2023. Curated in this edition by beatrice rock, an art historian with training in the management of cultural projects, together with a curatorial team made up of agents from the artistic field in different areas and disciplines, the exhibition is made up of a selection of the works registered in the Phe Gallery 2023 call to date. June 9. The curatorial team is made up of: Dailo Boat, filmmaker, curator and cultural researcher; Paula Skull, an urban artist specializing in the creation of murals and whose work addresses issues such as the concept of identity and female empowerment; and Zulo Room, an exhibition space founded by the architects Pablo Delgado and Iñaki Pérez.

“The artists challenge us to reflect on various topics ranging from tourism and aesthetics, to desire and pleasure, Canarian traditions and festivities, climate change and the relationship between architecture and dance”, explains the curator Beatriz Rock. An exhibition that invites us to rethink our relationship with nature and the impact of our actions on the planet. As the curator explains, in this artistic proposal “we will explore the compulsive accumulation of objects and their symbolism in relation to the Canarian identity. Through still lifes, we reinterpret festivities and traditions as fabricated myths that reflect the social and cultural organization of our environment. In addition, we present works of visual metaphors symbolizing the threat of climate change”.

The public will be able to discover the different artistic proposals at the Castillo de San Felipe Cultural Space until August 27, as well as in the Columbus Shopping Center, Alteza supermarket, Ágora Bar & Café and Autos Plaza. In this way, Phe Gallery opens up to other spaces in the city, with interventions in attached places and in shop windows to offer the public a tour and visual game with innovative artistic proposals.
