The best of national indie music arrives in Puerto de la Cruz with the Phe Festival

The best of national indie music arrives in Puerto de la Cruz with the Phe Festival

A concert indie with the participation of some of the most important national bands on the current scene. This is how it looks this year Phe Festival, with an eye on the 2017 edition to hold a large-scale event, a new music festival that will make available to the public a program of fresh, unique and original artistic and social actions, designed to be enjoyed in Puerto de la Cruz , and which includes a training and informative meeting, dedicated to cultural management and its implications for tourism entitled Power Changers 2.

Phe Festival is part of the planning project conceived in the Cultural Strategy of Puerto de la Cruz 2020, which also includes projects of the stature of festivals such as journey, Mueca, port street art or Canary Jazz Festival and in which the public institution, City Council, seeks to generate alliances and complicity to promote the feeling of co-responsibility for a common project together with various entities, creators, citizen groups and private companies. The Phe-Festival Thus, it becomes another of the great bets promoted by the culture area of the Porto City Council, from an integrating and participatory principle and a defined commitment to quality that also affects the promotion of Cultural Tourism. Sandra Rodríguez, Councilor for Finance and Culture of the northern consistory, maintains that "with this new commitment, our city achieves a continuous line of commitment to culture, generating both artistic, economic and social wealth." Phe has the support of Puerto de la Cruz Urban Rehabilitation Consortium, Council of Tenerife in its areas of Culture and Tourism and the Canary Islands Government.

In this 2016 edition, as a preview of what will be the first big event of next year, the festival will count for its appointment on August 6, with the groups Cycle, the red room, Of faith, Belako, Red Beard and Kostrok, a firm commitment to groups that are a reference in the independent national sphere and electronics with international claim. Among its programmatic lines is also granting an important role to Canarian musical production.

Phe, designed for the enjoyment of a wide spectrum of the public, is a festival that wants to grow in the north of Tenerife from the consideration of the city of Cross port as an international benchmark for tourism and a pioneer in Spain of a socioeconomic model that is constantly being updated. The stage will be located in a closed area on the esplanade of the port, next to the sea, with the philosophy of promoting human, artistic and musical diversity and that attendees find in it a leisure alternative to spend a good weekend.

Cycle, one of the best bands of recent times, returns to the Tenerife stages as one of the main claims of Phe Festival. They do so after celebrating their tenth anniversary with 'Dance all Over', their fourth album, rock danceable with electronic punch, basses and synths from David Kano, the provocative voice of La China and the exciting voice of Luke Donovan, a mixture of rage, tenderness and sadism. Together with them, the Valencian band the red room headlines this presentation concert for Phe, on the presentation tour of his tenth studio album 'Sagrado Corazón', with which they have sneaked into the top of the bills of independent music festivals.

Also with a new LP, 'Hamen', they arrive from the Basque Country Belako, group of rock, post punk and electronic music considered by critics to be one of the most promising on the national independent scene. And from rock more vital to electronics more indie from Kostrok, the Valencian DJ duo made up of Adrián Lurbe and José Martí who triumphed on the dance floor last summer with Right Now.

The latest addition to the PHE lineup is Of faith, or what amounts to the same thing, Oscar D'Aniello, now on his own after finishing his stage with the Flores Azules, who has just presented his new album 'La Fuerza Irresistible'. A repertoire of vital songs with a style that mixes pop, hip hop, soul, funky, disco, and that bring a positive and carefree character to this concert Phe Festival who wants to be a festive referent in the concert calendar of the Archipelago.

Puerto de la Cruz: tourism was born here

festivalgoer, because not everything is going to be music, sun and beach, we invite you to browse through the evolution of an authentic city that went from being a commercial port to the European center of tourism, and that today is reinventing itself to become referent of cultural tourism.

Not everyone knows it, but certainly Cross port it is loaded with history. Although it is now an 'alternative' vacation destination that offers the 21st century visitor unique and original experiences, this municipality in the north of Tenerife (the smallest on the island with 8.7 km2) was the place where tourism began in the Canary Islands in the first decades of the 19th century.

There are even those who say that this city was always touristy, even when what is now known as tourism did not exist. In fact, there are archaeological evidence ‚éľnecropolises and burial caves‚éľ that bear witness to how the island's aborigines, the guanchesThey moved to the coast of Orotava Valley in search of a more pleasant climate to spend the winter months. Come on, some precursors of tourism in high season.

And it is that when making trips for the pleasure of knowing other cultures, landscapes turned out to be exotic, and the spectacular nature of the natural environment, the mild climate and the sky of the Port had called the attention of many scientific expeditions who in the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century visited the island on their way to America, Africa or the East. You know why? Well, because of the proximity to which It was believed then that it was the highest mountain in the world, the Teide, venerated both by merchants and navigators as well as by travelers.

But the imposing volcano was not the only thing that allowed the development of tourism in the Canary Islands, and in particular in Puerto de la Cruz, since its geographical and historical singularities they made merits to lift him up in the number one of the tourist destinations par excellence, displacing Madeira and Europe.

From the first decades of the 19th century, and after the opening of the waters of the Atlantic at the end of the Napoleonic wars, British people with health problems began to arrive on the island in search of a climate that would better favor their convalescence, that is, a health resort. AND Cross port, at that time the main port of the island, became the first tourist destination in Tenerife and the Canary Islands.

One of the discoverers of the touristic and curative qualities of the Port was William Robert Wilde, one of the most recognized figures in medicine in Victorian Britain and father of writer Oscar Wilde. He made a visit to the valley of La Orotava and recommended Puerto de la Cruz as a better destination than Madeira and the Italian and French Rivieras, it was an unparalleled propaganda accolade for the city.

But therapeutic holidays were not the only objective of visitors to the municipality at that time. there was also ‚Äúhikers‚ÄĚ for leisure or pleasure. The historian Nicol√°s Gonz√°lez Lemus tells us that ‚Äúin 1848 a British expedition arrived from Madeira to take an excursion to Teide‚ÄĚ. Long before the first tour organized by Thomas Cook to the Alps!

One could not speak of a tourist movement such as today, neither Tenerife nor the rest of the archipelago had a solvent accommodation infrastructure, and yet Cross port It had some hotel establishments. The first inn in the Canary Islands it was opened there in 1814 when an English carpenter rented a house on Zamora Street to make it the lodging place for many British people. And this was the origin of later significant projects that began to consider tourism as an economic activity, as is the case of the Marquesa, Monopol and Buenavista hotels and the representative Hotel Taoro.

The most significant of all was the first sanatorium of the Canary Islands to welcome sick tourists, the Hotel Orotava, which opened on September 12, 1886 as first Spanish tourist center in Europe with services designed to provide rest, comfort and personalized attention to foreign visitors.

It is from then on Puerto de la Cruz is consecrated as the first tourist enclave of the Canary Islands. Among the anecdotes that are told of the time, it is said that in the winter of 1887-1888 it was recorded the first overbooked of the history of tourism in the Canary Islands, given the success of the call of this city among British visitors.

Cross port then lived great moments. Today tourism has changed but the city continues to preserve an exuberant physical and natural setting, a temperate climate with warm summers and pleasant winters, a historic center where tradition and modernity coexist and a cultural offer that is more than attractive for those who are no longer satisfied with spend the holidays lying on the beach.

Phe Festival offers special discounts for ULL students

Phe Festival is a musical event that will take place next 6th August on Cross port and will have a poster made up of the groups Cycle, Of faith, The Red Room, Belako, Red Beard, Kostrok and Mr Paradise as continuity DJ. The organization of the event and the University of La Laguna have signed a collaboration agreement through which the institution's students will be able to enjoy a 20% discount at the concert ticket.

The process to obtain it will be through a discount voucher redeemable in the online purchase of the ticket with the code PHE&ULL, which is already active on the ticket sales platform Ticket. This link explains the process of how to redeem this bonus:

When printing the receipt, it will appear that they are beneficiaries of the ULL student discount and that is what users will have to show, along with the card that accredits it, at the door when accessing the festival. The deadline to do it is until 11:59 p.m. on August 5.

Furthermore, the organization of Phe Festival has traded with the platform cultural packages for residents of all the islands, whose prices could be of interest to ULL students from other islands who wish to come to the festival in August:

Depending on your organization, Phe Festival seeks to promote a program of "fresh, unique and original artistic and social actions, designed to be enjoyed in Cross port‚ÄĚ, which may be interesting for the university public. Hence the interest in specifying this according to the ULL, which this year is limited to the discount, but could be extended to other common actions in future editions of the event.

Phe Festival reaffirms its sustainable commitment

On the occasion of World Environment Day we remember and declare good intentions for the fourth edition of the festival and all those to come in Puerto de la Cruz, hoping that they will be many and successful…

‚ÄúKeep your love for nature, because it is the true way of understanding art.‚ÄĚ

Van Dick de Jong.

Phe Festival has declared itself from the beginning as an inspiring festival, dedicated not only to music but to trends in their broadest sense. The entire team behind the project believes that sustainability and care for the environment is an ideal goal to turn into a way of life, in reality, the most urgent of trends since it is the most necessary and vital of all.

Our growth is slow, but every year we challenge ourselves to improve in all possible aspects. Thanks also in part to the collaboration of all the phellowers who give us their pheedback through the form that we publish every year at the end of the festival. In this edition we have a new team that fully joins in just for the coordination of this entire area that also grows along with the festival.

separate to recycle

We promote the selective collection of waste at different points of the festival to reduce the amount of garbage and encourage recycling. The collaboration with Ecoembes  and Ecovidrio and your participation by throwing garbage in the appropriate landfills will help us take care of the environment while enjoying the festival.

In the enclosure you can also find a composter for organic food waste, etc. in the food area.

We also weigh the different types of waste to think of new ways not only to recycle but also to reduce their generation.

Remember that…

Yellow: light packaging (plastic, cans, etc).

Blue: for paper and cardboard.

Green: just glass.

Conventional: other remains

Composter: organic matter for composting.

An ephemeral venue designed to surprise

Our furniture and decoration are 100% sustainable, they are completely ecological or recycled materials, reused and transformed furniture, canvases from previous events converted into puffs filled with clean plastics collected by collaborating businesses, pallets... the bulbs and decorative lights are rechargeable or solar powered .

This year as a novelty there will be small models of solar panels for electricity self-sufficiency during the day at points such as ticket offices, bars, shops, etc. It is also planned to provide a water point for free use by the public, which can cool off in hot hours.

Turning something used into something new and different is also an art form. From the organization we promote this type of action by creating our festival space with materials used from other editions, recycled and reinvented. All this to transform an apparently inhospitable space like the esplanade of the quay, which during the rest of the year serves as nothing more than a car park.

Moving also leaves a mark

We want to reduce the footprint we leave on the environment when we move, trying to make as few trips as possible and by car sharing.

From the organization we will do everything in our power to facilitate access and parking, as well as reward those who leave zero footprint in our environment, moving to the festival by bike, skate, skate...

We encourage you to use public transport or share a car, even using collaborative internet platforms such as Blablacar, Amovens or Wonowo.

Responsible and local suppliers

We promote the good things that our land has and that is why we like to work with local suppliers that also have a responsible culture towards the environment. Both the supply for the backstage and for the staff come from local caterers with km 0 products.

In addition, this year we will again have different recycling and awareness workshops in the area outside the venue, conveying the message not only to festivalgoers but to all passers-by who come in a pleasant and active way.

Social integration of minority groups

We favor accessibility for people with disabilities as well as specially prepared spaces so that their participation in the festival is safe and they enjoy greater enjoyment from an elevated platform to watch the concerts with peace of mind.

We offset our carbon footprint

Planting a tree is sowing awareness.

Every year we take accounts to find out what the festival's carbon footprint has been, that is, its impact on the environment and offset it to nature. We will evaluate the consumption of water, electricity, gasoline, etc., and based on the result of these calculations, the action of planting its equivalent in trees will be carried out with the support of local associations and institutions.

If you want to be part of our sustainable project and consider yourself a person with motivation, ideas  and concern for the environment; If you want to enjoy the festival while being part of the team and taking care of the environment, go to our website and fill in the form to be a volunteer at Phe Festival and create an unforgettable experience.

Phe 2020 commitments

May 6, 2020

Phe Festival cannot today confirm its celebration on the scheduled dates or on later ones this year. But it does not announce its cancellation either. The uncertainties caused by this enormous crisis are still many. It will depend entirely on the evolution of the pandemic and the economic and social situation in our environment during the de-escalation phases announced for the coming weeks.

What we can confirm are the commitments we have maintained since the first edition. With our public, all those people who have experienced it those years ago and hope to return in 2020. With Cross port as the mainstay that continues to be of this project and essential reference of our objectives. With the music industry and the culture sector in the Canary Islands, which now needs all the support and well-deserved recognition that society can give it. In this long list we can add especially to the City Hall Culture Area, to the sponsors, collaborators, companies, artists and workers that at some point they have also felt Phe Festival…

We will make the necessary effort so that this situation is resolved favorably while we continue to wait for the authorities to determine a legal framework that allows us to deal adequately with the commitments contractually acquired with the groups, suppliers and others.

We understand that the health and well-being of citizens must come first in any scenario and decision that is made. In case of cancellation or forced delay of the festival, we will contact all the people who have bought their subscription and offer them a refund of the amount or the change for a new date within the established legal deadlines with the greatest transparency.

A festival is already an event full of uncertainties that we try to face in the most positive way. All the more reason in the current situation. We believe that we must continue supporting live music, supporting the tourism sector in the islands and proposing more culture with sustainable attitudes.

We want thank you for the messages of encouragement that we have been receiving in these difficult times and to share that support as much as possible with everyone who is being most affected by this situation.

We count on you,
because we still have Phe.

As you know, our colleague ‚Äėplug-in‚Äô translator isn‚Äôt perfect, but Its good enough to get a rough idea of how cool PHE FESTIVAL is ;)

In case you have any questions, we will be happy to help you by mail or social media.
