The tenth edition of Phe Festival hosted this Wednesday in the municipality
Tenerifean from Puerto de la Cruz on an informative day about the economy
circular, environment and sustainability. This is one of the actions
driven by the organization of the Phe Festival as part of the Phe initiative
Circular, in a commitment to sustainable development with practical actions that
they reinforce the role of creative industries as drivers of change.
The meeting was presided over by the presentation of the Economy Action Plan
Canary Government Circular (2024-2026), in an event moderated by Ángel
Pablo Montañés Ríos, Director General of Ecological Transition and Fight against
Climate Change; María Ferrer, Doctor of Sustainability and expert in
Circular Economy, which currently advises the Canary Islands Government on
Implementation of the Canary Islands Circular Economy Strategy 2012-2030 and the
Circular Economy Action Plan 2024-2026; Alexis Robles Hormigo, CEO
from the consulting firm Innovarir, which was responsible for drafting the Plan for
Circular Economy Action 2024-2026; Nicolás López Rodríguez, degree holder
in Pharmacy and CEO of Ranilla Craft Beer, founded in 2022, the first
artisanal brewery in Puerto de la Cruz; and Carlos Ulises Salazar,
co-director of Phe Festival.
After the presentation, the podcast "Palique Divulgativo" with Pili Martín was held.,
Vicky Palma, María Guerrero, and Carla Henríquez; the eco- workshop and concert
didactic: Don't throw anything away, touch it first, with Alessandro Ferrato; and the
Performance of the Woodwind Quintet, starring Tania García.

During Tuesday the 2nd, Wednesday the 3rd, and Thursday the 4th, the chance was given to visit this place so close to the sky. Sun Dance Family Session (SDFS) It's for all the family dancers. It doesn't matter if you're 75 or 5 years old. If you like dancing as a family, this is for you. It's an electronic music and movement matinee that will begin with a short physical warm-up. SDFS is a dance floor with live DJ beats, while a body and movement professional guides kids and adults to release tension, let go, and dance together without rules. Phe Gallery opens call for entries for its eighth edition
The call, open until June 8, 2025, is aimed at artists residing in the Canary Islands whose works will be part of a collective exhibition at the Castillo San Felipe in Puerto de la Cruz during the month of August.
Phe Festival, together with the support of Canarian Youth, the area of Culture of Puerto de la Cruz and CajaCanarias Foundation, open the announcement for the eighth edition of Phe Gallery, and it does so while maintaining its essence: giving visibility to emerging art in the Canary Islands while exploring new forms of dialogue with our environment. If you're an artist, you're in the right place (and at the right time). Phe Gallery continues to grow, positioning itself as a key platform for emerging art in the Canary Islands.
The The exhibition will be on display from August 8 to September 7 in it San Felipe Castle Cultural Space, in Puerto de la Cruz, and will be accompanied by the already well-known Gallery Talks: meetings, reflections and conversations between artists and the public in a unique setting.
The call is open until June 8, 2025 and is aimed at emerging artists residing in the Canary Islands, or who present projects linked to the archipelago. It doesn't matter if you move in the installation, video art, photography, sculpture, painting, sound art, performance or multidisciplinary formsAll disciplines are welcome. You can participate individually or as a group, with completed projects or those in production (as long as they're ready for editing by August).
A plus? This year we especially value proposals that address topics such as sustainability, recycling or the environmental crisis of our coasts. But it's not mandatory. The important thing is that your project has something to say. Art as a tool to transform, raise awareness, and generate critical thinking.
The curatorial team, led again by beatrice rock, will be made up of expert voices from the arts, culture and the environment: Elena García (founder of the Lapanera gallery), Estefanía B. Flores (visual artist with international projection), Federico García-Trujillo (contemporary painting and visual research) and Marta Glez. Carballo (benthic ecology and marine conservation).

Dance cures everything on the second day of Phe Festival 2024

Dancing cures everything and the musical sequence between stages at the PHE Festival on its second Saturday day clung to the dance floor as if there was no tomorrow. The concerts by León Benavente, Trentemøller and Goose were great, both for the attitude and impact of these bands, each in their own style and musical concept, and for the response they received from the public. And as the PHE Festival is not only fuelled by speed and electronic sequences, the Saturday day left more intimate and bare proposals in the musical aspect, and others that move between rock and pop, funk, psychedelia and new flamenco, which had Mavica, Shego, Nala Rami and Camellos as protagonists.
Above all, it was a night of dancing, with DJs and selectors on the third stage inaugurated this year, the Espacio Domo Jagermeister. One of those unique and unforgettable days that are the hallmark of PHE Festival, which was taken away when León Benavente took to the main stage, after 9:00 p.m., with Abraham Boba, who knows how to lead the audience to the right place. It was the second time that the band was in Puerto de la Cruz, after the 2017 edition, and their formula of rock implemented with sequences and structures that draw on the most vitamin-rich kraut got an audience on its feet, jumping and singing along, who also wanted to go crazy at the feast that León Benavente was serving up.
A complete repertoire that started with Type D and ended much higher with Yesterday I went outThe band shook up their discography, four albums released, plus EPs and others, in a concert with a notable electronic pulse, increasingly present, in which without respite and with Abraham Boba moving in and out, they sounded There is no fear, Provisional state, Like the stone that floats and I love, in a first loop of songs. Brave spirit, almost an ancient hymn in their repertoire, La Ribera, California, Shooting the horses, Our anniversary, Mythical, At the feast, Being a Brigade, Glory and the aforementioned Yesterday I went out, completed a concert that is already historic in the history of PHE Festival.
But before the story of the last dance that PHE Festival brought, with Trentemøller and Goose, we must take note of what happened in the middle of the afternoon at the opening, which had Mavica on the stages of the port area, fronted by Marta Casanova, who opened the doors to the pop melancholy, acoustic and with electronic production, with which she has dressed the album. Sometimes a person never comes back (but that's okay). After her, the Madrid-based Maite, Raquel and Charlotte, the members of Shego, gave a concert in which they made good on the label of emerging band with the album Good luck girl (2023). Among others, they sounded Forgive me, Oh Boi, Sorry, I'm crying all over, I'm horny, I'll kill you or Steak Tar Tar, with which they ran out of time.
THE MIRROR BALL
The pop psychedelia and neo flamenco that make the Sevillians Vera Fauna their hallmark (version of I blush, by Papa Levante, included) was another of the sensations of the second day of PHE Festival, in which there was also room for old school funk with Nala Rami, the group of the Gran Canarian saxophonist Alan Himar. The winner of the Sonora Las Palmas de Gran Canaria competition arrived in Puerto de la Cruz with Pasaporte Sonora and a set that embraced the mirror ball with pieces such as I died in the disco, Superficial or Sundays.
The final stretch of PHE Festival was in another league, with the Danish Trentemøller in band format, the Madrid-based Camellos and the Belgian group Goose. Without a doubt, the international triumph of this edition goes to the musician, DJ and producer Anders Trentemøller, and the musicians he came with: Diisa Jakobs (vocals, guitars, synthesizers), Silas Tinglef (drums, guitars), Brian Batz (guitars) and Jacob Haubjerg (bass). The Danish maestro made his debut in Puerto de la Cruz with a master class on dream pop, shoegaze, psychedelia, with passages of the caliber of Dreamweavers or Moan, and others where the guitars in the shadow of Dick Dale, for example, are contaminated with acidic and twisted rhythms. Superlative elegance for electronic gourmets.
Before the party electro rock of Goose, the PHE Festival lowered the revolutions slightly to welcome Camellos. The punk adjective applied to the Madrid group has to do with the songs and how the public reacts, as could be seen. From their own creation, they delivered songs such as Mallet, Divorce, Rice with things, Who is laughing now, Copper flavor or Dance factory, by Joe Crepúsculo, who they invited to sing with them to make the party complete.
The closing of the PHE Festival was for Goose and the catchy electro rock played by the Belgians. Songs like Bring it on, title in addition to the debut album in 2006, or What you need, to name some of the hits that the quartet brought to Puerto de la Cruz, set the pace and the final dance steps for the ninth PHE Festival.

Puerto de la Cruz, the usual destination for a different tourist
The adjective "tourist" in all its numbers and genders for a good concordance is the classic epithet for Cross port. Achilles, the one with light feet, Hector, killer of men, Odysseus, prolific in tricks, Puerto de la Cruz, tourist city, all have their reason. Scholars of history and literature have already stopped at the first; in the last one we will extend ourselves, with greater or lesser fortune, throughout this post.
From the outset, let us clarify that the choice of the previous examples is not trivial, nor is it the result of the obsession with the classic of the person who writes this. Since the Port is a port, it has been a receiving city for visitors, in fact, it was here that the first tourists who set foot on the archipelago arrived: as of 1880, tourism begins to have an important weight in the local economy, which is formalized with the construction of the Gran Hotel Taoro in the last years of the century, becoming the flagship of the beginnings of tourism in Puerto de la Cruz, although the authentic tourist boom could be established between the 50s and 80s of the 20th century: it was in the 60s when it became the most important tourist city in the Canary Islands and the hotel and service sector became the predominant occupations of the inhabitants of the port.
This, which could be the story of any tourist city in any area of any Mediterranean country, has its own peculiarities (the others will have them too, but we don't know them, excuse us). Cross port it was still a small fishing town, whose hotel centers had been created from the remodeling of old family houses. The arrival of tourists influences but does not change excessively the idiosyncrasy of a city accustomed to receiving visitors of all kinds on its coast and these visitors, in turn, seem to be infected with the spirit that Puerto de la Cruz has. It was always, and we believe that this is one of the keys, horizontal tourism, a visitor who becomes a citizen more than a guestAt least during your stay. A “citizenship” that comes to be like love, that is eternal while it lasts, but that, decades later, turns out to be the ideal tourist model, coveted and theorized by destinations that knew how to ride the wave of the tourist boom of the sixties but, perhaps, they did not know how to ride it.
Puerto de la Cruz, in favor of tourism, may have modified its physique, part of its architecture in that unstoppable wave that was the boom in the sixties of the last century, but its idiosyncrasy was unbreakable. Distinguished visitors attest to this spirit of which we speak, artists and intellectuals who, choosing the city perhaps as a retreat for a couple of days, extended their stay and became residents of the city. They passed through the Port, yes, but the Port, inevitably, also passed through them.
And, years later, it remains firm in its character, Puerto de la Cruz setting a trend in cultural tourism. Far from being a tourist ghetto, the city prides itself on an enriching coexistence between natives and foreigners, a relationship between equals in which the two parties grow and evolve together.
